Some Election Reaction

What they say:

Chirac:

French President Jacques Chirac spoke with President Bush by telephone, saying he was satisfied by the "participation rate and the good technical organization."

"These elections mark an important step in the political reconstruction of Iraq. The strategy of terrorist groups has partly failed," Chirac said, according to a French presidential spokesman.

Putin:

Russian President Vladimir Putin also praised the elections, calling them "a step in the right direction and a positive event," according to the ITAR-Tass news agency.

"The conditions for holding the elections were quite difficult, to put it mildly," Putin said after meeting in the Kremlin with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. "At the same time, I must say that the very fact of it is an important event, maybe a historic event, for the Iraqi people because it is undoubtedly a step toward democratization of the country."

They were wrong in the past, Putin as recently at last month when he declared that elections would be impossible as long as U.S. troops were in Iraq.

(Parenthetically: Last month, UN super-envoy Lakhdar Brahimi declared that elections in Iraq were "impossible" unless the international community stepped in to "help the Iraqis to clean up this mess.")

Perhaps this will lead to Chirac offering to assist in training Iraqi troops, which will serve at least to quiet Joe Biden and his sycophants: McCain, Kerry, Hegel,. et al.

And I'll leave aside the lone military maneuver the French can teach the Iraqis. It is too obvious, and it could be considered a cheap shot.

UPDATE: I've found a little reaction from Germany (and others) in the Morocco Times:

[A] spokesman for German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder described the high turnout a determination of Iraqi people “to take their future into their own hands.”

Which is a tacit vote of confidence in the legitimacy of the elections, but it's not as promising as Chirac's bleat.

and it could be considered a cheap shot.

Nothing's too cheap when the object of the ridicule is France.

I would like to hold my final opinion until we hear from the Germans, but I do observe that it is a great comfort to me (and I am sure to the President) that the Axis of Weasels (at least 2/3rds of them) sort of approve. Its not quite enough to lift my personal boycotts on anything French or German or Russian, but it is a step in the right direction. Only about 2 million more steps for them to go.

"The strategy of terrorist groups has partly failed,"

Can someone explain to me what was the "strategy of [the] terrorist groups"?

If it was to kill Coalition and Iraqi "infidels", then they succeeded completely. Someone who is dead cannot be "partly" dead.

(Unless of course, we are living in the Princess Bride, in which case, we just need to go to see Billy Crystal to get the cure for being "partly" dead, since he had the cure for being "mostly dead".)

If it was to stop the elections, then it has completely failed. Unless of course you want to say that since approximately 40% of the registered voters did not vote, then that says it "partly failed." I guess then that means that all the United States elections of the past all "partly failed", since we have never had more than 60% of the vote in recent history in any United States election.

So Mr. Chirac, please explain to me what was the "strategy of the terrorists"? And how did it "partly" fail?

I tell ya, these people are just the most pessimistic, boring and bunch of boobs...

It is promising to see them start to consider coming around at least.

I doubt they're coming around... it's more like looking at the blue sky and KNOWING that you'll be a total laughing stock if you try and convince people it's red.

They're just trying to hold on to some shred of their credibility.
