Two teenaged girls in Colorado were successfully sued for the monstrous crime of baking cookies and dropping them off randomly at neighbors houses. No, I'm not kidding; no, this is not a joke - the story can be found here from the Denver Post.
The claim of the plaintiff was that when the girls "banged and banged" at the door, she was terrified that there might be burglars out there...'cause we all know how burglars knock before entering. At any rate, scared lady managed to get a lawyer willing to sue (this is sort of like finding a boozer willing to have a drink) and strangely managed to find a judge who didn't laugh a bit and then fine the plaintiff for stupidity beyond all imagining. The plaintiff claimed that the stress of having her door knocked on sent her to the hospital, and the result of the case is that the girls are ordered to pay $900 towards medical expenses (the Judge refused to award pain and suffering compensation - but this means that the plaintiff asked for pain and suffering compensation!).
A local radio station is collecting donations to help pay the judgement for the girls. If you wish, you can go here to donate.
Does anyone want to argue with me that we don't need tort reform? Anyone?
Hat Tip: NRO's The Corner
the judge should be de-benched, the lawyer de-bared, and may the plantiff have recurring nightmares of the cookie monster..this story is pathetic.

Daniel, that's a good one - 'nightmares of the coookie monster'. :-)
This suit is plain absurd.

I used to live in Cortez, Colorado and visited Durango many times as our "big" town.
I am ashamed of those folks. The Chamber of Commerce should come out solid in favor of the 2 young ladies and donate the fine money.
Also the folks of Durango need to look at that judge for retention.
'Nuff said.

It also indicates that we should require that all Law School graduates at least be able to pass a high school CSAP test before they get their diplomas. Unfortunately, there is no comparable exam that measures ethical behavior.

Can't believe there was not a mass protest to shut down the town until the lunatic fringe (judge, lawyers and dingbat) were railroaded to a more appropriate hospice such as Massachusetts with Ted and John.
