Senator Sarbanes Calls it Quits

Long-time Democratic Senator Paul Sarbanes has announced he will not run for re-election in 2006:

Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes announced today that he will not seek another term in the Senate, ending a 34-year congressional career in which the liberal Maryland Democrat played a role in crises ranging from the Watergate impeachment proceedings to the corporate accounting scandals earlier this decade.

Sarbanes made the announcement at his Baltimore office shortly after 1 p.m. "I reached a decision that I shall not be a candidate for reelection . . . ," he told reporters.

Maryland it a pretty Blue State, but it has had some Red indicators of late; especially in the person of Republican Governor Robert Ehrlich. Governor Ehrlich is the natural first thought as a replacement, but the Governor has a lot more to do, and additionally has a re-election in 2006. Perhaps, though, we've already got Maryland's next Senator all set to go: Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele.

I can hear the wales and screeches from Sharpton already! After what he did to Vernon Robinson, in his bid for Strom Thurmond's seat during the PRIMARY!, I cannot imagine what this man will endure if he chooses to run. Both Mr. Robinson, and Myrah Kirkwood, went through more hell from other blacks, than they did from their actual opponents! It's horrendous what they do to black conservatives, and there should be more outrage expressed about this issue!

Can we give him a golden parachute to leave, say, tomorrow?
