Bill Weld might run in New York

The New York GOP is reportedly talking to former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, a liberal Republican, about heading their gubernatorial ticket or possibly taking on Senator Clinton in 2006.

State GOP Chairman Stephen Minarik said Sunday that he had not met with Weld about running for statewide office in 2006 and would not comment further.

There is talk of Pataki not seeking reelection next year in order to run for President, opening the door for the former Massachusetts governor to run for governor of New York. According to the Boston Globe, "Sam Houston is the only two-state governor in history, having served as governor of Tennessee from 1827 to 1829 and Texas from 1859 to 1861."

More interesting to me, however, is a possible run against Senator Clinton. As Hillary reaches rightward, Weld would not have to lean to the left, and the epithet of "carpetbagger" can realistically be used by neither side (or both).

The Dems will use it. The Extreme Media will plaster it everywhere. It'll be portrayed as a "scandal" unique unto Weld, and a sign of GOP "desperation."

Count on it.

That said, Rodham-Weld is an intriguing matchup.

But then, so was Kerry-Weld in '96, and we know how that race turned out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't there a bit of an established precedent for a resident of Massachusetts to run for Senator in New York?

Bobby Kenne....something or other....

...former Massachusetts Governor William Weld, a liberal Republican...

To paraphrase from the movie "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,"

"Liberals? We ain't got no liberals. We don't need no steenkin' liberals."

Pataki should run against Hillary, Giuliani should run for Governor, and Weld should stay in Massachusetts.

Whey do we want a Democrat-in-drag to run against an actual Democrat?

I want Al D'Amato back!
