Gore in 2008?
by Mark Noonan at 04:15 PM

The conventional wisdom is that it will be Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee in 2008, with some side-glances at Governor Richardson, Senator Kerry, Senator Bayh and John Edwards. This is considered as sure a thing as you can get in politics. Missing in most lists for Democrats in 2008 has been Al Gore; the man I consider to be the almost-sure thing Democratic nominee in 2008. Heck, in the end I don't even expect Hillary to run.

Tom Elia at The New Editor brings us a some tidbits which may indicate that Gore is thinking about 2008:

Last Thursday, Chicago Sun-Times gossip columnist Michael Sneed (who served as press secretary to former Chicago mayor Jane Byrne) ran this blurb: "Sneed hears whispers Al Gore, who keynoted a rally against the Republican plan to end judicial filibusters in Washington Wednesday, may be contemplating another run for the presidency in 2008."

And then today, it was announced that Gore will win a Webby Award for "lifetime achievement" for his contributions to the development of the Internet. Gore of course was lampooned during the 2000 election campaign for his comment that he "took the initiative in creating the Internet."

Is this the beginning of the rehabilitation project of presidential candidate Al Gore?

Tom's a smart guy, but the rehabilitation project, such as it is, started about two seconds after Gore finally conceded in 2000. The model is Richard Nixon, and the Democratic man of 2008 will be Al Gore; roaring in on waves of leftwing anger, and backed by his friend Howard Dean at the DNC.

I was under the impression that Al Gore is going to concentrate on molding young minds with GoreTV.

Anger will not get anyone elected. Ask Howard Dean how well it worked for him. If the donks decide Gore their guy for their ticket, stand back. The exodus from the Democrat ranks will knock you down!

{The model is Richard Nixon, and the Democratic man of 2008 will be Al Gore; roaring in on waves of leftwing anger, and backed by his friend Howard Dean at the DNC.}

Your theory has a few holes in it, Mark.

One, Nixon was the last example of a retread making a successful comeback even for his party's nomination, and that was forty years ago. The political culture has changed a great deal since then, and is a lot less forgiving of losers.

Two, Nixon's comeback was fueled by the GOP's destruction in the 1964 election. He played the good soldier, barnstorming the country campaigning for Republican candidates in the 1966 mid-terms, then called in all those chits in 1968. The Dems didn't suffer anywhere near that level of wipeout last November, and thus Gore has a lot less political capital to be had.

Three, for the GOP in 1968, there was no one else. The nomination would have fallen into Nixon's lap by default even if he had left anything to chance in the previous three years. That's certainly not the case now for the Tennessee 2x4, with Hillary's coronational procession already under way.

Our party was profoundly blessed to draw two such abysmal opponents in Gore and John Kerry back-to-back. Carter/Mondale/Dukakis-like trifectas just don't come along that frequently, I'm afraid.

We'd be far better served to get ready for Hillary now, while there's still time to slow her down. Because you can count on there not being such a chance later.

He is dead in the water. The only thing we need to remind people is of the concentric circles of Goreness where he drew concentric circles with his name in the center and "the nation" in the last one after all his leftist buddies. Let him run! He can answer why his commission on air safety proposed nothing of consequence before 9/11 or answer for his illegal campaign contributions! It will be a blast.

Gore wants is, and he'll put up a good fight for it, but he's too much damaged goods.

Face it: the only democRat to get re-elected President (and even then only by plurality) since 1944 was named CLINTON.

Look at democRats since FDR:

Truman: not elected President, got it via death, elected on his own in 1948 but in 1952 the White House and almost the entire federal government went GOP.

JFK: killed before re-election. Had he not been martyred, there is no evidence he even would have been re-elected.

LBJ: Shades of Truman.

Carter: worst President of the 20th Century, if not ever, led to the Reagan revolution.

BILL CLINTON: RE-ELECTED DESPITE STRONG PRO-GOP TREND EVERYWHERE ELSE IN GOVERNMENT.

Who is the party going to turn to in 2008? The one name in the last 64 years that actually succeeded at the ballot box for the democRats.

The only question is: who will be her VP? I'm guessing Barack Obama, and if we aren't careful, they'll annoint Hillary early on and she'll tap Obama BEFORE we get a chance to put Condi on the ticket--if that happens, then our support of Condi will look like reactionary racial politics.

Hillary is the 800 lb gorilla in the room.
