Douglas Won't Run For Jefford's Seat

Vermont Governor Jim Douglas has decided not to run for the Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Jim Jeffords:

"To put an end to the speculation, the parsing and the political jockeying that distracts from achieving these goals, I have decided to announce my intentions now, so that we can all return our attention to the work before us," he said last Saturday at a brief news conference.

He had been under pressure from the White House and Republican leaders to challenge Rep. Bernie Sanders, the Independent to fill the seat...

If we do this right, we could score a real coup in Vermont.

Jeffords will be out. Sanders is running for Senate, leaving his House seat open. If we found two good candidates and put the stronger one up for REP, then a democrat running for Senate making a 3 way race could allow the weaker of our candidates to win the Senate.

Once we get a Republican in the House, he's there forever. That's a real score for us. And then we take an all important Senate seat.
