The Wages of "Compromise"

Looks as though Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has touched off a political firestorm over his support for the craven "compromise" on judicial nominations:

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) Sen. Lindsey Graham's role in a compromise on filibusters against President Bush's judicial picks did not go over well with some GOP regulars in this Republican state...

..."It's one of the hottest issues I've seen since I've been chairman," said Katon Dawson, South Carolina's GOP chairman for three years. "There was a lot of heartburn inside the base of the Republican Party. President Bush won 70 percent of the counties in the United States and people wanted his agenda moved forward."

Hundreds of people have called state Republican headquarters to complain about Graham's participation in the negotiations. Graham's role has given Charleston businessman Thomas Ravenel further reason to consider a primary challenge to Graham in 2008.

It is, of course, only 2005 and there is plenty of time for Graham to mend political fences before 2008 but this shows the level of anger in the GOP base about this misbegotten "compromise". The main thing which angers we GOPers is (a) we worked so hard for a stronger GOP majority in the Senate and (b) there was no need to compromise...Presdient Bush wasn't doing anything which needed to be compromised on...he was just nominating justices in accordance with his Constitutional duties and in line with the general political will of the United States. If these justices are hate-filled extremists who need to be "compromised" away, then the GOP is nothing but a bunch of hate-filled extremists...this is just cowering before leftwing hate propaganda...and it rankles. A lot.
