Byrd in Trouble?

Senator Bryd (D-WV) is currently our longest-serving Senator (having entered the Senate before Castro entered Havana) and he has long been considered untouchable...but perhaps not any more (from Best of the Web Today):

Here's an intriguing political sounding from West Virginia: "A new poll shows Sen. Robert Byrd and Rep. Shelley Moore Capito would run neck and neck in a possible campaign for the Senate seat now held by Byrd," Friday's Charleston Daily Mail reports. The survey shows Democrat Byrd with just a 46% to 43% lead over Republican Capito--which should be worrying to an incumbent who won his last two elections with 69% and 78% of the vote.

Aside from the infuriating fact that gives us yet another reason to be ticked off at the Supine Seven for getting Bryd off the filibuster hook, this does show that in increasingly "red" West Virginia, even someone as iconic a Byrd is beatable. We really need to pour in the money and effort...getting Byrd's political scalp would be the crowning glory of the 2006 elections...even better than getting Hillary out.

This could be a sign of another terrific election in 2006 for Republicans. Read more at Conservative Conolia.
