My call to John Whitehead, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., was returned by a spokeswoman who wanted to clarify some points made by Debra Burlingame in her Wall Street Journal op-ed.
She said that the International Freedom Center was selected to be the cultural component of Daniel Liebskind's winning master plan for the site. The winning design entailed not only a memorial to the dead, but also a tribute to the resurgence of life. That tribute consists of a performing arts center and a cultural center. After a painstaking process, including public hearings, to review over 100 submissions the LMDC selected the IFC for that cultural center. Incidentally, some of the structural remains of the World Trade Center, including the twisted facade of one of the towers and the damaged globe, will be part of the underground memorial, which will enable those artifacts to be preserved. She also mentioned that, though schematics will be released in the next month or so, the relative proportions Ms. Burlingame pointed out (300,000 sq. ft. for the IFC and 50,000 sq. ft. for the memorial) are incorrect.
She also pointed out that John Raisian, Director of the Hoover Institution, is on the advisory panel for the IFC. Her point was that it is a balanced group that includes conservatives as well as liberals. I have emailed Mr. Raisian in the hope of getting his response to Ms. Burlingame's op-ed. If he responds, I will post it.
UPDATE: I forgot to mention that, in contrast to the names mentioned in an earlier post, interested parties should contact IFC Chairman Tom Bernstein (212-336-6200 is the number for Chelsea Piers, the sports complex he runs in New York) and IFC President Richard Tofel (dtofel@ifcwtc.org)
Doesn't the Spokeswoman mean those who want to dedicate the memorial to those who died in the towers and those who blame America for those who died in the towers?
I don't care what kind of spin this "Spokeswoman" spewed. Just to have ANY portion of this memorial that focuses on "lynchings" and other things America did wrong is an abomonation! Open their own damn place in Berkely.

Interesting information. Some I knew - the master plan and IFC siting issues. Some I didn't - makeup of the IFC.
As I note on my own blog, which has been addressing the issue of WTC rebuilding, the LMDC has a mess on their hands and will only get worse. They selected this particular group because it was the best funded, not necessarily because it was the best.
Big difference.

Here's the IFC's "Mission & Vision"
The International Freedom Center--[bla]
Museum Exhibition Spaces: telling freedom's story, inspiring visitors to appreciate it on a personal level by looking at the countless individual women and men around the world who have made a difference. Spurred by hundreds of hours of consultations with nearly 100 scholars, museum experts and leading thinkers, the museum will include a "Freedom Walk" offering visitors a multimedia collage of some of freedom's most inspiring moments, interwoven with deeply moving and unequalled views of the Memorial as well as a set of galleries offering compelling and thought-provoking treatments of great freedom issues and stories from around the world, throughout the ages and up to the moment. Temporary exhibits will draw on other historic site freedom museums around the world.
Educational and Cultural Center: sponsoring an extensive array of lectures, symposia, debates, films and other events in its theaters and public halls that will nurture a global conversation on freedom in our world today. Much of the Center's evening programming will draw on offerings from members of a university consortium being assembled by the Center and its partner the Aspen Institute.
also mentions the Tribeca film institute-
But I decided to look up the Aspen Institute and this is who is on the board-

The New York Times put out a hit piece today on the "Take back the 9/11 Memorial" petitioners.

This is getting a little ridiculous. Why can't the 9/11 memorial just describe what happened on 9/11?

The 9/11 museum will be apporx. 50,000 sq feet, entirely underground. The IFC will be the third largest museum in NYC, behind only the world famous Museum of Natural Histoy and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. All entirely above ground.
The LMDC spent yrs gathering comments. They often brag about that. What they don't mention is that by law they are not required to apply any of what they gather. They have ignored those they want to, applied others at their convenience. The IFC is NOT a cultural building; it is political. Nobody suggested drawings of naked women with their legs spread and supposed to be a political comment on Iraq.
They received countless comments asking for an artifact or remnant such as the Sphere or facade at street level; this was also a suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the "Memorial Center." That was ignored by the LMDC. It has only recently been suggested by the IFC as sort of a bribe to the 9/11 families.
They have ignored Liebskind's plan at their convenience; it is completely unrecognizable now. They tossed out his "Heroes park" a tribute to the rescue workers who died 9/11 for the sake of preserving every inch of office space.
Nobody is coming to ground zero for Ukraine democracy or to be inspired by the Tibetan monks. They're coming for 9/11.
Our freedom was NOT attacked 9/11; they did not attack to take our First Amendmenant rights; they attacked to take away our right to breathe. They are not interested in our freedom; they want us dead.
Bernstein and his collection of intellectuals cannot understand that. They want to dilute and diminish and deny the truth of 9/11. They are not only wrong, they are dangerously wrong.
