It Won't Be Gonzales

Bill Kristol is one of the most well-connected conservative commentators in Washington. When he claimed that Alberto Gonzales would be the President's choice to succeed Sandra Day O'Connor, it was treated with the seriousness accorded the most astute of observers. After all, he predicted that O'Connor, not Rehnquist, would retire.

Now, however, he has shifted his stance.

Although President Bush is understandably fond of and loyal to his attorney general Alberto Gonzales, it's simply a fact that Gonzales does not have the stature of several other possible candidates. I now believe that, though tempted, President Bush will leave his attorney general in his current office.
Then again, he may have just been reading GOPbloggers.
