Democrats Praise Roberts, Grasp at Straws

Democrats are perplexed about what to do with John Roberts.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., called Roberts' performance a "tour de force."...

Schumer, reading a prepared statement, praised Roberts for testifying hours on end "without any paper in front of you at all, without a single aide whispering a word to you or passing you a note."...

"You may very well possess the most powerful intellect of any person to come before the Senate for this position," Schumer said.

Schumer praised Roberts' quest for modesty and stability, and for being his "a lawyer above all."

But the Democrats are being pressured by liberal groups to vote against this supremely qualified nominee.
But the eight Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee — and other Democratic senators — are being pressure by liberal interest groups unified against Roberts. As the hearings continued today, the committee Democrats seemed to be searching for a way to explain to their constituents a vote against the nominee.
This sums it up: we have a nominee acknowledged to be a towering legal mind, yet Democrats are so partisanly beholden to their pressure groups that they will vote against him. The GOP should never, EVER give another Democratic nominee the same respect and deference they showed to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. By their own actions, Democrats have discarded two centuries of tradition and precedent to please their most extreme constituents.
