Just how does a carpet-bagging junior Senator from New York with Presidential ambitions square the circle between average Americans and the leftwing Democratic base? Well, this is part of the way Hillary is attempting the trick:
On Friday night, however, she took a step back toward the center when, as the New York Post reports, she "dealt a crushing blow to the International Freedom Center planned for Ground Zero, saying she wants the project canned for failing to listen to the 9/11 families."
There's Hillary - in favor of continuing the liberation of Iraq, opposed to Judge Roberts, meeting Cindy Sheehan, backing up the good people at Take Back the Memorial...um, Hill, old gal...it ain't gonna work. Eventually, in order to get the Democratic nomination in 2008, you're going to have to come all the way out in favor of the far left...but that will kill your chances of winning in November of 2008. Must suck being in such a Party, huh?
Don't think that Hillary is the only Democrat caught in this bind - each and every Democrat who's seeking the 2008 nomination is similarly placed...they must build up hawkish national security credentials while placating a leftwing base which long ago left rational opposition to the war behind. I don't think it can be done - and my only wonder is if the part of the Democrats which bolts in 2008 will be the left because a centrist got the nod, or the center because a leftist got it...
