Yet More Democratic Insanity

The latest bit? Well, the claim that wireless internet access is a fundamental human right:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who became internationally known for his campaign a year ago to legalize gay marriage, on Monday said he considered wireless Internet access a fundamental right of all citizens.

Officials said 24 proposals had been turned into the city to deliver wireless Internet services, ranging from Web search company Google Inc., Cingular, the No. 1 U.S. wireless carrier, to Internet service provider EarthLink Inc..

Newsom told a news conference that he was bracing for a battle with telephone and cable interests along with state and federal regulators who he said are looking to derail a campaign by cities to offer free or low-cost municipal Wi-Fi services.

This cannot possibly surprise any conservative...of course WiFi is a right. Hell, if among are rights is a right not to be offended (ie, PC nonsense), then we certainly have a right to WiFi...after all, the Democrats are the people who come to our blog and demand a right to post slanderous and vulgar comments...its a natural that they'd also demand really cool internet access as a right.

We out here in flyover country would like the right to have internet options other than dial-up. There are still millions of people who don't have any other options except dial-up (unless you want to pay for exorbitant satellite connection, but it isn't that important to me, yet).

Check the Good Mayor's ties to Silicon Valley, and especially Google, whose plans to introduce a $100 laptop for the world's poor and set up a world-wide wireless "zone" have been recently announced.

Is the Good Mayor angling for a position on Google's board? Or perhaps on the board of some company whose related technology will benefit from a wireless networking "right?"

Carstairs,

Sorry about that - it isn't working, and I can't find a substitute news report on it...one thing I did find out is that a Google search for Newsom brings up "image results for gavin newsom" first...never, ever seen that in a Google search...sounds to me like Google is helping out.

You know... if they'd just let the market play out, something like this would be the end result. We'll have just as easy access to computers and the internet as we do to televisons and cable (and probably even more). When I was in college, I really good computer was $3500. Now you can get the same level for closer to $1500, and basic computers for well under $1000. Why try to force it through government intervention?

And calling it a "right" just dilutes the meaning of the term. Right to life, right to freedom, right to wifi. Yup, they all sound equally important to me.

Boy, are they gonna be in trouble in 2050, when it's conclusively proved that microwaves cause brain cancer....imaginge the lawsuits!

So if wifi is a 'right', what about the computers that use it? Does that mean the government's should be giving everyone a laptop? I mean, if the access is a right, the next logical step would be to assume that the computer is too. And if you want to get technical, what about cellphone service? Where do you stop with this crap?

This is cool, you have to try it. I guessed 36016, and this game guessed it! See it here - http://www.funbrain.com/guess/
