Democrats, frantically grasping at any pathetic straw in an attempt to scuttle the nomination of supremely qualified nominee Samuel Alito, are using the word "balance." They say that because O'Connor was not a "conservative" (liberal and conservative are useless terms for judges), she should not be replaced by one.
Although that argument is absurd on its face, Democrats seem to forget that Bill Clinton nominated "liberal" Ruth Bader Ginsburg to replace "conservative" Byron White. So much for balance. But, since Clinton upset the delicate balance of the court with Ginsburg for White, it is only fitting that Bush restore that balance with Alito for O'Connor. Again, "balance" is an inane and irrelevant point to debate (elections, and their consequences, determine what the proper "balance" will be), but if Democrats want to use it, Republicans can always defeat it with the Ginsburg precedent.
