Why are our Democrats using racial slurs against Lt. Governor Michael Steele of Maryland? Because as a conservative Republican who happens to be black, he threatens the Democrats' stranglehold on the black vote:
Black Maryland Democratic leaders say Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele's run for the U.S. Senate could put them at odds with black voters who would question their endorsing a white candidate, such as U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin, over the black Republican."I think at that point I'd be saying that I am endorsing the Democratic ticket," said Delegate Obie Patterson, Prince George's County Democrat and former chairman of the General Assembly's black caucus.
"It would be a much more difficult task to rally the troops to get out and vote for a single person such as Ben Cardin," he said. "It would be easy for me to sell it as a Democrat supporting Democrats. ... Whether I can do that actively enough to bring over all my friends, I'm not sure."
Translation: We might not be able to get 90% of black voters to vote Democrat in 2006. The thing is, without 90% black support for Democratic candidates, there would probably be 50 less Democrats in the House and a half dozen less in the Senate, with proportional decreases in Democratic officeholding down to the State and local level.
By and large, other minority groups in the United States are at least somewhat competitive for Republicans - even the Jewish vote, long a Democratic stronghold, is fracturing as leftwing anti-Semitism becomes more pronounced. But the black vote has stayed resolute for the Democrats - in this, I blame two things: miserable GOP outreach, and Democratic slanders about racism endlessly directed against Republicans.
We are improving GOP outreach to black voters, but the proof will always be in the pudding. It will be in doing the legislative and executive things which directly assist black Americans and in putting forth and electing black Republicans where we'll find ourselves competitive with black voters. Michael Steele represents both GOP currents...and, mark my words, the Democrats are afraid of him.

The time has come for the Democrat exploitation of the Black vote to end. The Republican Party espouses the Christian and Family values that are prominent in importance to the Black Community. The tide has begun to turn, and more Black voters are getting wise to the Democrats. Many have already switched their registration to Independent. Leaders like Steele will inspire more Black voters to consider their options more carefully.

Because of the obvious confusion in the Maryland GOP as to the number and names of certified Republican candidates for the United States Senate seat to be vacated by Paul Sarbanes, please be advised that there are two other Republicans contending for this seat, besides “The Anointed One” being pushed by MDGOP as the only Republican on the ballot.
In alphabetical order, the other two candidates are Daniel Muffoletto, a retiree from Ellicott City who filed his certificate of candidacy on or about July 10, 2005, and Corrogan R. Vaughn, a Baltimore businessman who filed his certificate of candidacy on or about July 7, 2005. I encourage all potential voters to determine for themselves who these other candidates are and what they bring to this ELECTION.
In summary, under our Constitution, we have ELECTIONS in the United States, NOT CORONATIONS!!!

Hardcase,
Steele, though, is the man of the hour...but we here at GOP Bloggers make no pre-primary endorsements...on the other hand, we are not omniscient...anything you can send our way about the other candidates would be appreciated, and blogged.

John,
That is the hope - but only a hope; it will take a lot of hard work on our part to convince our fellow Americans who are black that we GOPers are the best option.

Please be advised that I am serving as Chief of Staff for the campaign of Corrogan R. Vaughn for U. S. Senate.
The purpose of this fax is to inform you that Mr. Vaughn was present on the date, time and place of the alleged Oreo ® cookie incident and he is concerned by the exaggerated statement by the lieutenaant governor’s campaign of what happened at this event. Yes, there were Oreo ® cookies used to make a statement, but these cookies were rolled across a street and down the aisle(s), not lobbed at the person of the lieutenant governor. There were several others present, obviously, and the incident is remembered as just stated.
This outrageous characterization by the staff of the lieutenant governor’s campaign is an insult to the people of the State of Maryland who may not always agree with the political opinions expressed by all citizens of Maryland but certainly do not resort to pelting their elected representatives with flying objects. In fact, truth be told, this could not have happened as stated by the lieutenant governor’s campaign because of the security surrounding him as he attends events. If anyone had done what is claimed, wouldn’t the lobbers have been wrestled to the ground because who would know what was being thrown? And if the security surrounding the lieutenant governor as he campaigns is so lax as to permit such actions in a crowded venue, perhaps he should see that the security procedures are more closely followed.
Thank you.
