Put Up or Shut Up

Breaking news in Congress tonight. House Republicans have maneuvered for a quick vote and swift rejection Friday of a Democratic lawmaker's call for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq.

By forcing the issue to a vote, Republicans placed many Democrats in a politically unappealing position - whether to side with Murtha and expose themselves to attacks from the White House and congressional Republicans, or whether to oppose him and risk angering the voters that polls show want an end to the conflict.

Let's dispense with the public flogging of our troops' efforts and put it to a vote. Either our lawmakers support the troops' mission or they don't. Time to go on the record instead of just pandering to the media, or playing the ambiguity game.

It's go time.

It's about darn time the Republicans did something effective. I have been extremely disillutioned with my party as of late. I truly hope they aren't done.

I saw the results this morning; rejected 403-3! Go Republicans!!!!!
Every time they force an up-or-down vote they expose the Democratic rhetoric for what it is: just words.
Here is a good article on it: http://www.washingtontimes.com/functions/print.php?StoryID=20051119-123457-8799r

Looks like you need to remain disillusioned. What the Republicans brought up had nothing to do with what Murtha brought to the congress. Watch CSPAN and take off your talking point headphones.

What amazes me is the willingness to act against one's own self interest, just to score points against George W. Bush.

I doubt there would be many Americans who would argue with the statement that if we were to present a united front to terrorists, they would be less likely to prolong the war. Yet there are millions who would exchange that advantage, and the fact that so many lives would be saved, for the ability to score a 'Gotcha!' against Bush and the Republicans. No one is so stupid that he or she can't realize that the divisions here in this country offer aid and comfort to the enemy, yet so many do it anyway, heedless of the cost, just on the chance they might be able to bring down someone they hate.

It baffles me. When did reason, and pride, and love of country, fall so far behind spite and malice and mean-spiritedness?
