Sens. Kerry and Kennedy must think the people of Massachusetts are so extremely left-wing that there are no repurcussions for absurdly Kosish behavior. Thus their call for a filibuster of the Alito nomination.
Sen. John Kerry will attempt a filibuster to block the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, CNN has learned. And he's got company.
Kerry said he told a group of Democratic senators Wednesday, and urged that they join him. Kerry said he has the support of fellow Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy. It's enough to make you laugh. 55 Republicans + Byrd + Johnson + Nelson = 58 cloture votes. Add Feinstein, who said she would not support a filibuster, and you get 59. Either one other red-state Democrat will come to his senses to vote for cloture, or the Constitutional option will be triggered and the filibuster broken. With Byrd, Johnson and Nelson voting "yes," it is impossible for the other Democratic members of the Gang of 14 to claim Alito is an "extraordinary circumstance," so they should vote for cloture and then vote no on the nomination if they wish. But a filibuster is highly unlikely and Kerry's move reflects his tin ear for politics outside of Cambridge.

Add Mary Landrieau from Louisiana who also said she would not support a filibuster.
This is just Kerry trying to pretend to be relevant.
