In Praise of Christopher Hitchens

Many governments, which shamefully included our own, hemmed and hawed about Muslim cartoon riots, qualiying all defenses of the right to free speech with warnings to be "sensitive" to religious beliefs. Such mitigating language is disastrous in the war we are fighting: the war to preserve the fundamental tenets of Western civilization. Christopher Hitchens understands this, and he organized a demonstration of support at the Danish embassy in Washington. Here are some pictures.

Have to dissent. Insulting an entire religion because you disagree with the antics of some of its adherents is childish, stupid, and self-indulgent, any way you look at it.

We are fighting the war to which you refer on two fronts. The other front is the equally childish, stupid, and self-indulgent inclination of many to insult Christianity and Judaism on just the same absurd grounds as publisher Rose claims for his decision to publish those cartoons.

Besides all of which, the reaction of the Muslim lunatics was predictable. Rose has blood on his hands.

I refer all and sundry to my blog, where I discuss this matter at greater length. This is simply not a free speech issue. The issue is civility- the willingness of the members of a civilization to disagree within self-imposed restraints which will enable those with radically diverging viewpoints to manage somehow to live together without killing one another.
