Senators Vote to Raid Social Security

Senators DeMint and Crapo offered an amendment to protect American taxpayers by prohibiting Congress from raiding the Social Security surplus and spending it. For the next 8 years or so, payroll taxes in to Social Security exceed benefits paid out, and instead of saving that surplus, Congress wastes it. The DeMint-Crapo amendment would have taken the surplus and put it into an individual account for each taxpayer so that Congress would keep its corrupt, money-grubbing hands off it. Of course, the corrupt, money-grubbing Senate didn't want us taxpaying simpletons to have control over our own retirement funds so they are looking after our well being by wasting our money on pork and other nonsense. Eight Republicans joined all Democrats to continue the raid on Social Security.

Conrad Burns (MT)
Lincoln Chafee (RI)
Susan Collins (ME)
Pete Domenici (NM)
Richard Lugar (IN)
Gordon Smith (OR)
Olympia Snowe (ME)
Jim Talent (MO)
Senator DeMint pointed out that now the American people know where each Senator (except the pathetic Voinovich who apparently had more pressing business) stands.
"Those who voted against this amendment voted to raid Social Security," Mr. DeMint said. "Now, every senator will be on record whether they oppose or support the raid."
When it came to letting each of us keep the excess payroll tax (i.e. money we worked for and earned) in our own retirement accounts - beyond the clutches of the corrupt, money-grubbing politicians - or keeping it for themselves to waste on pork, the corrupt, money-grubbing politicians voted for themselves and against us. Let's all remember that.

Sadly, not many surprises on that list.

Social Security is just a tax and is spent like tax revenue. SS benefits have to be paid from current tax revenue, so the current rate supports entitlements. If you spend it all, taxes can go nowhere but up. When there is talk of SS going broke, I think that only means that current revenues attributable to SS deductions do not cover current benefit payouts. President Bush's SS reform plan was a way to wash the Feds hands of the whole program, that is except the part about paying survivor and disability benefits, which is major in itself. I have yet to hear of a better idea. Of course, it would mean that Congress would have less money to spend, so obviously it got little support.
