You know the GOP's fiscal policy is dismal when Barney Frank makes sense.
Mr. Chairman, I am here to confess my reading incomprehension. I have listened to many of my conservative friends talk about the wonders of the free market, of the importance of letting the consumers make their best choices, of keeping government out of economic activity, of the virtues of free trade, but then I look at various agricultural programs like this one. Now, it violates every principle of free market economics known to man and two or three not yet discovered. This time, Barney Frank is absolutely right. And when that happens, you know the GOP is in big trouble.

I worked for Barney Frank in from 1985 to 1991, handling his Banking (now Financial Services) Committee issues. On many occasions he pointed out the rigid opposition by many Republican members to genuine market competition, noting who on the Republican side did their best to stifle market forces. I recall many Democrats on the committee being frustrated with a lot of Barney's votes, while pro-competition, free-marketers welcomed them. One ranking Republican asked publicy at the time if Barney was a closet libertarian, having just come out of another closet.
