DeLay Might Not Retire

As Democrats attempt to win DeLay's House seat in the courts, DeLay may up beating them at their own game.

Former U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay suggested Friday that he may not be ready for retirement just yet, a day after a federal judge ruled that his name must remain on the November ballot even though he resigned from Congress.

DeLay, who came home to Sugar Land for a previously scheduled event, also criticized U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks' ruling that the former House majority leader's name had to remain on the ballot.

"For this guy to say he can't tell where I'm going to be on Election Day, and that I am forced to be on the ballot, well, they may get exactly what they want," DeLay told supporters to raucous applause. Sparks is a Democrat appointed by Republican former President George Bush.

Later, reporters asked Delay if he now planned to run. He didn't say no.

"We have to wait and see what the 5th Circuit does on appeal," he said.

After what happened a few years ago in New Jersey, fighting to get Robert Torriccelli off the ballot and replace him with Frank Lautenberg (despite the fact Torriccelli dropped out after the constitutional deadline), for the Democrats to pull the stunt they are trying pull is ridiculous, but, if DeLay chooses to stay in if the courts buy the Democrats argument, then the Democrats may wish they had just shut up... Democrats have abandoned their "culture of corruption" mantra, as ethical troubles of members of their own party are starting to make headlines... If DeLay stays in, he'll likely win reelection, and the Democrats will have no one to blame but themselves for their loss.

If DeLay does stay in and wins reelection, I suspect he'll also stick around for a while, rather than retire after his new term starts. Which means the Democrats will have lost two battles at the same time.

Matt, I would be so freakin' tickled if Delay came out of retirement and won (re)election. I hope the courts rule that his name stays on the ballot...
