The Democrats' 2006 Strategy: Run as a Republican

The latest memo (PDF) from James Carville is out, and in it you'll find that what makes the Democrats most palatable to swing voters is, well, an assurance that they'll act like Republicans once elected:

Now let me read you some things about the Democratic candidate for Congress. After each one, please tell me whether you find it very reassuring, somewhat reassuring, a little reassuring or not at all reassuring:

The Democratic candidate says no member of Congress should get a pay raise until the incomes of average Americans start to rise again - Very Reassuring (VR), 56%/Total Reassuring (TR), 75%

The Democratic candidate supports middle class tax cuts, including making all college tuition tax deductible - VR, 46%/TR, 77%

The Democratic candidate believes marriage is between a man and a woman and opposes legalizing gay marriage - VR, 37%/TR, 54%

The Democratic candidate supports regulations to help parents limit the amount of sex and violence their children are exposed to through television, music and video games - VR, 34%/TR, 62%

The Democratic candidate opposes any amnesty for illegal immigrants, wants greater law enforcement on the borders and in the work place, and a practical solution for the undocumented, if they are working and law abidiing (Ed. Note; this is precisely the President's plan) - VR, 31%/TR, 66%

The Democratic candidate is opposed to any precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, though believes we must have a change of policy and direction there - VR, 22%/TR, 58%

Interesting, Carville notes earlier in the memo that he "hates" the gay marriage issue - but notes that a Donk who can say he is opposed to gay marriage should say so, as that works best for him.

What we've got here is a blueprint for the most egregious example of Clintonite triangulation ever seen - and the Kossacks and DUers will go ballistic over it. Meanwhile, it won't work - because no matter how many times a Democrat mouths what Carville suggests, the GOP will be able to point out that a vote for Donk X will mean support for Nancy Pelosi, who wants gay marriage, a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, no tax cuts and no restrictions on the amount of sex and violence kids are exposed to.

If a vote for Dem X is a vote for Pelosi, a vote for Repub X is a vote for Denny Hastert, who wants to keep minimum wage good and low, spends federal money to enrich himself, holds Congressmembers above the law, runs a rubber stamp House, and is a blatent hypocrite. (See http://brownbagblog.com/2006/04/hastert-promotes-hybrid-car-at-photo.html

I'd take Pelosi over Hastert any day.

The Kos kids won't go ballistic, except in the sense of exuberant unquestioning support of every contradictory, lying, pandering nugget of fecal matter that comes out of their candidates' mouths. They still haven't noticed that the Clintons played everyone (except me, I guess) for patseys. It's infuriating to think that this kind of politics may once again fool enough of the illiterate, ignorant masses to get another "Clinton" into power. God help us. Why can't literacy, at least, be a prerequisite to voter registration?
