Welcome to GOP Bloggers' second 2008 Straw Poll. Back in March, we held our first 2008 Straw Poll, and tallied over 12,450 votes. Well, we decided that it's time for a new poll to see how things have changed.
This is a unique 2008 primary straw poll, you get to pick which candidates you find acceptable and which ones you don't (similar to the recent Gallup Poll), and it will tally who has the largest net positive or net negative support. Feel free to vote for as many or as few candidates as you'd like. If you have no strong feelings towards a candidate, you don't need to vote either way.
Like our previous poll, you can post this one on your own blog and have your readers vote in the poll directly from your blog! The code is located at the bottom of this post.

I voted in the bloggers straw poll and, in viewing the results, I was very dissapointed. (I must state for the record that I am from the very, very, very small libertarian wing of the GOP). What dissapointed me was to see George Allen as the favored candidate, the one deemed "most acceptable." I really think that if the GOP is dumb enough to nominate a (sorry for the language) buffoon like Allen for the presidency, we would be committing political suicide. Hillary will beat Allen in a landslide.
The way I see it, we can nominate someone whom the hyper-religious base of the party finds acceptable (and risk people like myself voting third party) or we can come to a compromise and nominate someone with a chance to win. I have to say I am scared about 2008 and, if we want to hold the whitehouse, we have to nominate someone who is acceptable to the majority of the country - Rudy, McCain or, if she runs, Dr. Rice - could all win against Hillary.
Maybe some in the party would rather nominate Allen who, they believe, stands for what they believe and thereby sacrifice the whitehouse and thus the war on terror, the economy and the courts. Or we could be pragmatic, make peace with the fact that some out their don't support discrimination against homosexuals and curtailing women's reporductive rights and actually win the election.
History tells us that it is rare for a party to hold the Whitehouse for more than 2 terms. We also know that 98% of the press will be on Hillary's side and that will improve her chances. I call on my fellow Republicans (whether from the religious or libertarian wing) to make a pragmatic choice for 2008. Think about it, do you really want the dems in charge of the war on terrorism?

Except that Allen isn't a religious conservative. He's pro-choice for the first trimester. That's enough to prevent many social conservatives from voting for him once they realize what he really believes. The 2004 election showed that getting the base out is what gets Republican candidates elected, not playing to the center. So why argue for the older strategy that has been shown not to work?

Dan, do you really think that Guiliani, McCain, or Rice stands a better chance? If the base is not appeased, a Republican will not win; those voters will simply stay home. And trust me, Hillary goes in with a huge disadvantage; her name recognition is high, so she cannot hope to swing too much of the vote, and right now she is not seen to favorably by the left or the right.
George Allen is very intelligent, and a much better communicator than George Bush. The only buffoons are the people who think that we have to compromise our values by picking RINOs to run.

Dan, anyone except McCain is preferable to Hillary, but Hillary is still preferable to McCain.
I don't see why a man who has stabbed the GOP in the back so many times should be rewarded with its presidential nomination.

I guess that explains Allen's 100% pro-life lifetime voting record in Congress and his vote AGAINST federal funding of stem cell research.
