"During the investigation an unprecedented level of surveillance has been undertaken and that surveillance has had as its objective to gather intelligence and evidence in support of the investigation," he said."We have been looking at meetings, movements, travel, spending and the aspirations of a large group of people. This has involved close co-operation not only between agencies and police forces in the UK but also internationally.
This wasn't the first successful use of surveillance.
It worked in January of this year.
...and back in 2002.
...and November, 2001.
If these busts had occurred in the U.S., we'd be reading about the ACLU's lawsuit on behalf of these jihadis and hearing calls for impeachment from the liberal Left.
But, of course, if the attacks had not been prevented using such surveillance methods, we'd be reading about the lawsuits on behalf of terror victims and hearing calls for impeachment for allowing it to happen.
Bottom line... the best way to catch a terrorist is to imagine what a liberal would do... then do the exact opposite!
UPDATE: Looks like our own liberal-hated surveillance system picked up some of this "chatter":
The Guardian newspaper, citing unidentified British government sources, said that after the arrests a message was sent to Britain telling the plots, "do your attacks now." That message was intercepted and decoded earlier this week, The Guardian said.A U.S. congressman briefed by intelligence officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the investigation, said U.S. intelligence had intercepted terrorist chatter.

Saying liberals are weak on security is crap. Sane liberals agree that survellience is sometimes warrented, but it needs just that, warrents. There is a right way and a wrong way to do things. We just need to find the right way, and just because we haven't spent time to figure out the right way doesn't make the wrong way acceptable.
And what's the US government doing spying on British citizens?

To answer your question, Nova Nardis:
Saving innocent lives.

Correction to NovaNardis' last sentence above:
"And, what's the US government doing spying on British terrorists?"
But, to liberals.....citizens and terrorists are all the same. That's why they should stay away from National Security.

I think the concern is that, in the future, even free-speech dissention, like that found on these sites, will be considered suspect and those excercising our right to it will find our rights slowly dissolving away. I do not disagree with any method used to contain terrorist acts, only the idea that it can be manipulated into a form of control of good citizens. that is a legitimate concern, and the possible abuses should be considered by any American interested in upholding our constitutional rights. we must do what is necessary to stop violent acts upon our people, AND, not OR, be concerned about how our government treats its new-found right to investigate persons for any reason it thinks proper at the time. As intelligent people, one would think we could manage both at the same time. The only way this will happen will be for those concerns to be voiced, and for people to be involved. Considering only 50% of Americans care enough to vote for their own pres, if anyone cared to or wanted to abuse this investigative system, seems it might be pretty easy.

I consider myself and average Joe American. I live in a very liberal area and most people I talk to don't care if peopel listen to their conversations or check out their financial transactions. I don't feel like that is abusing my right to privacy. Being killed by a bomb plot that intelligence couldn't track because their hands were tied would abuse my right to privacy...and to live.
