And Democrats' House Prospects Also Fade

As noted by Powerline:

I've written before that I think Democratic prospects for retaking the House of Representatives are likely overstated in many quarters, because, while it is easy to talk of a "Democratic tide," it is not so easy to identify the specific races that the Dems will win to gain a net 15 seats. Further to that point, this morning's New York Times headlines: "For Democrats’ Hopes, Less Promise in New York."

[J]ust a few months ago, Democrats envisioned significant gains in New York, perhaps picking up as many as four seats, possibly even five. But that goal now seems increasingly remote....

By the Times' count, it now appears that the Dems may be lucky to pick up a single seat in New York. The Times attributes that to local consitions and the specifics of the New York races, but, of course, that's the point.

I'm no genuis - heck, sometimes I can say the most boneheaded things ever uttered by the mouth of man...but I am a fair to middlin' political observer. In all of this 2006 election cycle, I never detected even a hint that the Democrats were poised for victory in November. The only way anyone could construct a Democrat victory scenario is to work from the assumption that a majority of Americans are liberals bamboozled in to supporting President Bush against their better judgement. Outside the precincts of the left, the MSM and those few conservatives who dislike President Bush, this theory was stupid, and seen as much by all and sundry.

America is a majority Republican nation - it has given a majority of its votes to Republicanism on the Presidential level since 1980, and on the Congressional level since 1994. This should be a pretty convincing indicator that we are living in a Republican America. This Republican America won't last forever - eventually, as always in the world of politics, the Republican Party will be turned out of power...but the opposition must stand for something different and positive in opposition to the Republican Party for there to be a switch.

You can't just hate President Bush.
