HR 4844 passed the House yesterday by a vote of 228 to 196 (only 4 Democrats voting in favor). The bill would do the following:
H.R. 4844 amends the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 and requires that every individual who wishes to vote in the 2008 federal elections must present a photo ID to be allowed to cast a ballot. Effective in the year 2010, voters will be required to provide a photo ID that could not have been obtained without proof of citizenship to be allowed to cast a ballot.Beginning in 2008, voters who arrive at polling stations without the required ID, will be given a provisional ballot and 48 hours to present a qualifying ID, and people voting by mail must include a photocopy of photo ID. States are also required to set up programs to distribute the IDs and must provide them at no cost to indigent voters. The cost for the program will be reimbursed by the federal government.
In a really cool twist of the political knife, the bill is an amendment to the 1993 voter reform which gave us "motor voter" as well as many other means for Democrats to get bogus votes in to our ballot boxes.
This is why we vote Republican, boys and girls - and unless you want to bring this sort of thing to a screeching halt, then its time to get out there and back the GOP for 2006.
