It is all we can figure from this news story:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Democrats on Friday said legislation that would require voters to show proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections was little more than a poll tax and urged Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to stop the bill. The measure, passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last week largely along party lines, would require voters to present at the polls a photo identification that also proves citizenship for federal elections beginning in 2010.
What is amazing, when you think about it, is that Democrats are essentially saying that the effort to obtain ID is so difficult for Democratic voters that requiring ID is like the old Jim Crow poll taxes designed to keep black Americans from voting. Don't the Democrats realise how insulting they are being towards their own constituents? Or, perhaps we should ask if they really are too dumb to get an ID if they continue to keep voting for people who insult them?
The real story is that Democrats survive close races by means of voter fraud - this has been a truth of American politics for more than a century. If its close, Democrats will use voter fraud to ensure their candidate wins - the more egregious recent examples of this are, of course, the 2000 Presidential race and the 2004 Washington State gubernatorial contest. Requiring an ID would make it vastly more difficult for Democrats to insert fraudulent votes in to the system - right now, the lack of such a requirement allows Democrats involved to go from precinct to precinct voting again and again using the names of dead or absent voters to cast multiple votes for Democratic candidates (and this explains why the Democrats are also dead set against any attempts to purge voter rolls of dead or absent voters). This is the rock solid truth, good people - keep in mind that in 2000, when the Democrats attempted to steal Missouri from the Republicans, they used a dead man as the plaintiff in a voting rights case designed to keep the voting open until the Democrats ginned up enough votes to win.
Its time for Democrats to start playing fair and square - time for a voter ID requirement in our elections.

Even worse about their challenge, Mark, is that the bill says this:
...states must provide the identification cards free of charge to those who can’t afford them.
It's not just playing politics, it's downright lying about it to keep the fraud alive.

Yeah, I heard Rep. Lewis (D-GA) and other members of the "victim mentality" crowd, the CBC, repeating the same old, 60's-style rhetoric about the disenfranchised poor and minorities, not being able to afford a voter ID--which will probably be issued to them free, if they can't afford it!!!
I find it hard to buy the "poor people" argument these days. I mean, how do you justify being too poor, when you have a cell phone on your hip, and you're putting gas into your Ford Expedition?
I wish when I were growing up, I was as poor as most of these people are today. It would've been a step up for my family...
