John McIntyre over at Real Clear Politics points out that recent polling shows that the Democratic attempt to smear Senator Allen as some sort of closet racist hasn't panned out - Allen still have a 5 point lead, which is outside the margin of error. Given the nature of Virginia politics - generally GOP, but with a very strong Democratic Party - this is an indicator that Allen will probably emerge a winner in November. But suppose it had worked - suppose Allen were down 5 points and was headed for defeat in November: would you Democrats out there really think it was a job well done?
This is a serious question which I expect no real answer to. You see, any answer I see on this blog will likely be self-serving. No one is going to come on the blog and claim pride in the slander attempt. There might be some hedging - deploring it mildly but pointing out the alleged racist subtext in the southern GOP - but there won't be any forthright condemnation of the effort...but also there won't be any stout defense of it. But the question remains: was it worth it?
This is something for you Democrats to take home with you and mull over in your hearts and minds over the next weeks, months and years. What price poltiical power? What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, but lose his soul? Would you really want to have won on the strength of a spurious charge of racism? Wouldn't you Democrats rather win because a majority believes you have the better policies?
I'm a Republican - I want the Republican Party to win, but if winning were to come at the cost of my honor, then I'd rather lose. I realise that part of your problem is just the way things are - the events surrounding TO show what a sick and voyeuristic society we are. At a time when the man needs privacy to work out his problems, all we want is each excruciating detail placed before us, facts and context be damned. It is hard to be moral in an immoral world - but this doesn't excuse immorality.
Really, Democrats, you need to start thinking about what you are doing.

The only thing that matters to democrats is winning. The means in which they accomplish this is completely immaterial.

In response to,"Tell me,Democrats,is it really worth it,posted by:Mark Noonan. Sir, I am amused that you Republicans continue to blame Democrats for Mr. Allen(va.) remarks, should I stand corrected?Didn"t Mr. Allens own big mouth get him in to the pickle he is in?As for as us Democrats,we will not have to worry as much about our souls as some of the Republicans will most likely have to.Somewhere this religious Administration in office seems to have forgotten some of the 10 Commandments,"Thou shall not kill, Thou shall not Lie,Thou shall not steal,Thou shall not bear false witness,Love thy Neigbor, and as usual, you will use Clinton,s adultery as a good mudslinger,But he did finallyown up to it,and the only one Clinton really hurt was his wife and daughter, and if you would like toquote the money it cost, lets thank the Republicans and Kenneth Starr for that big bill, but it seems that the Republicans in office likes to spend big bucks doesn,it?I feel like the women involved in the Clinton affairs share 50% of the blame,They were all adults, not children,I wonder if you have ever heard the saying,"You can,t rape a willing soul".I can.t believe the Evangelical Right Ministers are not fussing about all the lies and deception of this Republican unholy 7,but it is probably hard to talk and wipe egg off of your face at the same time.As ever, your pride and true Democrat,Patsy Nelson

Patsy,
I guess you are typical of a proud Democrat - all you can do is condemn the GOP for real and imagined sins...but what about your own muck throwing? Suppose Allen did at some distant time in the past use a racial slur - is bringing it up at the end of an election cycle really the way you want to win? Don't you believe in your ideas? Or is slander the only way you can get ahead?

Mr.Noonan,Read your post.Must I stand corrected for what was your comment,my only sin was answering your post.Mr.Allen shouldn't call people names and as far as the racial slurs(the N. word)I believe it was Mr. Allens friends that quoted him,not us Democrats. Patsy Nelson

Patsy,
You're missing the point - do you, as a Democrat, want to win because of something Allen said decades ago, or do you want to win because you have the better candidate and program?
It is shameful, this dredging up accusations at the 11th hour...

I am fascinated by anyone asking, “Was it worth it?”, at this moment our history. Was Vietnam worth it? Was Watergate worth it? Was sex in the Oval Office worth it? Was invading Iraq worth it? Are all the dead and injured Iraqis and US Service Men and Women worth it? Is dirty politics on both sides worth it? Is screaming and name calling 24/7 from both wings worth it? This great country needs a break from the overload of hate. Why don’t you start it?
