Florida Rep. Foley Resigns

Well, the blogosphere is buzzing with the story of Florida Rep. Mark Foley's resignation following the revelation of his ... extracurricular activities.

The thing about this is the "ah ha!" attitude coming from the liberals in the blogosphere, as if the actions of this one Congressman somehow reflect upon the party.

I can't help but think that if Foley was a Democrat, Rahm Emanuel would be talking to reporters about a "Republican smear campaign," and his fellow Democrats would be rallying in his defense, the same way they do with Bill Clinton, who has been accused of everything from sexual harassment to rape.

From what I've seen so far, there hasn't been any defense of Foley's actions from members of the party, and his resignation is surely being met with a message of "good riddance," not unconditional defense.

So, good riddance to Rep. Foley.

Yes, good riddance.

As for "aha!", look no further than yourself and your little blog empire for plenty of much less justified stawman hitjobs, portraining people you disagree with as less than human. I won't sulk about Foley, and will also say "good riddance." Why can't you say the same about members of your party who are subverting conservative ideals and acting in much more profoundly disgusting manners, albeit less provacatively?

Winnow,

Because we don't agree with your views on what is happening. We're not going to attack people who are doing what we elected them to do.

All I've got to day is that there are some things that are a little gray about Foley's... absurdity... and what the GOP brass knew and when. Until proven otherwise, I'll think the best.

But when William Jefferson first started with the corruption problems - and the House Dems IMMEDIATLY stripped him of his leadership - you clumped Jefferson in with the rest of the Democrats. So, don't expect the benefit of the doubt if you aren't willing to give it to others. If you want to have an idea, just be 100% thorough with it, it has to extend to all areas. For instance, if you like small government, intervening with Terri Schiavo doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and neither does prosecuting Orgeon for it's Death with Dignity act.

Nova,

Actually, Jefferson was busted in August of 2005 and only stripped of his leadership position in June of 2006 - not exactly immediate, if you ask me.

The reason we used - and will continue to use - Jefferson as a club to belabor you Democrats is because it took you so long to finally act on this case...meanwhile, as soon as a hack prosecutor in Texas manages to secure a bogus indictment of DeLay, not only are you Democrats demanding DeLay's immediate resignation, but also demanding that all the funds raised by DeLay be returned.

Additionally, what Foley is accused of doing is an entirely different species of action - Jefferson is just another pathetic, bribe-taking pol on the make...Foley, if he's guilty, is a man who has fallen in to horrific moral error. His redemption is still possible, but he must - as he has - remove himself from public life because any man who does what he is accused of doing is so far gone in to moral depravity that he cannot be trusted with any sort of responsiblity whatsoever.

I wonder how Foley could stay in congress such a long time. There must be something wrong with the electoral system, if people like Foley can make it into congress.

Thank you for sharing this story with me !

"Jefferson is just another pathetic, bribe-taking pol on the make...Foley, if he's guilty, is a man who has fallen in to horrific moral error. His redemption is still possible"

So, bribe-taking = unforgiveable sin, Pedophilic sexual harassment = redeemable sin. It looks like the only thing that makes this equation balance is political party.

You people are pathetic. Take your lumps like men.

It is true that we don't know all the facts, but it is clear that Congressman Foley wrote emails and engaged in IM conversations that were not appropriate. Further he was Chair of the Republican Caucus dealing with Missing and Exploited Children. Further, it is clear that some members of the Republican Leadership were aware of all of this many months ago and did nothing.

This is the same Republican Leadership that jumped at the opportunity to impeach a President because he lied about an affair with a White House intern.

There are some important differences: Clinton's affair had some physical contact; there is no evidence of physical contact in this case. Clinton lied in front of a grand jury; we don't know if a crime was committed in the Foley case. Clinton's affair was not age appropriate, but not illegal; Foley's affair is more than age inappropriate--it is completely out of bounds.

And of course, the biggest difference: Republicans responded to Clinton with impeachment and Foley with shrugged shoulders.

Your party has a pedophile and a leadership team that protected him and let him carry on with his behavior. Yeah, if I were you I would lamely try to bring up the Democrats too.

Foley is no worse than Clinton. Clinton received oral sex from a woman, and Foley wanted oral sex from an underage boy. I think the Dem's need to do some comparison work here.

Robert: you're trying to be humorous, right? Are you telling me that you don't know the difference between an adult woman and an underaged boy?
