The problem with trying to unfairly use a scandal to tar people who weren't involved is that whenever you are engaged in a dishonest and disreputable enterprise, you're bound to do things which will expose you for what you are - as Bob Beckel found out via Ace of Spades:
Democratic Strategeist Bob Beckel: Fact That Mark Foley Was Gay Should Have "Raised Questions" About More Innocuous EmailsLikens Gay Man Around Boys To Notorious Bank Robber Willie Sutton Hanging Around Banks
On Hannity & Colmes two minutes ago.
Hm. How quickly they change their tacks.
Now the reality is that I would tend to be suspicious of any gay man interested in being "friends" with a sixteen year old boy. (Or, for that matter, any straight man interested in being "friends" with a sixteen year old girl.)
But it seems to me the Democratic Party stands as a whole for the proposition we must have no suspicions about gay men who want to hang out with boys in the woods.
I happen to like Beckel - he's a Democrat and an ardent advocate for his side, but he's the kind of Democrat who used to be the majority of the Democratic Party. But he's really stepped in it here.
Of course, Beckel is not anti-gay, but you just know if any GOPer had said this, the whole of the MSM and the Democratic Party would be calling for his head on a platter.
Foley is a man who did a very bad thing and he'll have to pay the price for it - and that should be the end of it unless someone has rock-solid, stand-up-in-court evidence that someone else in the GOP deliberately tried to cover up Foley's actions. The Democrats are playing with fire, and they are going to get burned.
