Minority Whip Steny Hoyer Calls Michael Steele "Slavish"

Trent Lott praises a long time friend, and gets branded a racist and ultimately loses his leadership position.

Will Rep. Steny Hoyer, the Minority Whip, lose his position or be forced to resign for calling African-American Republican Senate candidate Michael Steele "slavish?"

Cardin, a dry and detailed-oriented career legislator, was upstaged at his Upper Marlboro event Sunday by the irrepressible Rep. Steny Hoyer, who did a comedy routine about the event’s host, Cool Wave Water, and told the audience that Steele had had “a career of slavishly supporting the Republican Party.”

It should also be noted that John Kerry was at the event. I wonder if he laughed at Hoyer's "joke."

Rev. Anthony Evans, president of the National Black Church Initiative, called Hoyer's remarks outrageous and destructive, " If I did not know Rep. Steny Hoyer, I would say that he is a racist. Such an insensitive remark characterizes the darkest history of black people in this country – slavery still greatly disturbs my moral soul. I am upset that our political environment tolerates such remarks which should be universally condemnation particularly by all Democrats. Slavery has never been and we will never allow it to be a joke."

This racist "joke" should not be tolerated. Democrats claim to be the party of minorities, but they've shown time and time again to tolerate racism against African-Americans that are Republicans. Steny Hoyer should resign as Minority Whip.

UPDATE: Too little too late... Hoyer "apologizes" for remark.

An empty apology only meant to avoid any political fallout is not enough. Hoyer should step down as Minority Whip.
