Setting a standard her party will be judged on in elections two years from now, speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi promised: "Democrats intend to lead the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history."
It's hard for any Democrat to lead a honest, open, ethical Congress when their party lacks those qualities.
UPDATE: Via The Corner:
Since WWII, the party of the incumbent President has typically lost more than 30 seats in the House of Representatives and six seats in the Senate during the second midterm. In addition, in the five wartime congressional elections since 1860, the President’s party has lost an average of 32 House seats and five Senate seats.

We got what was coming to us. We were not beaten by the opponent we lost because of the numerous scandels that mired different candidates throughout the country. The Dems will f@#k it up and the door will be open in the near future for the Republicans to take back the house & Senate. I hope when that happens that they actually do something with it. As a person who has consistently voted Republican unless the Republican was not prolife and their opponent was I am saddened at the state of our party. The RNC and many of the state & local republican party machines need to look in the mirror and make a decision to stop being hacks and greedy creeps who are only concerned with taking care of themselves. UPDATE:
Dems lost NO Senate seats in '98 and actually gained 5 House seats. So, yeah there have been bigger wins (Dems in 58), but there have also been smaller or non-existant ones. The GOP lost, and the new Democratic majority is the same size as the GOP one was for the last two years. So, think about that.
AND we have the Senate.

"AND we have the Senate"
Umm... no, we don't. But what bother's me more about your comment is the use of the word "we". The GOP lost this election for many reasons. One of the biggest reasons was that they turned a deaf ear to the people and listened only to big money, corporations and Pacts that paid them money. But moreso, it's time to stop thinking of "divide". It's time to stop thinking of "red" and "blue". It's time to stop thinking of "we" and "they". All of us are Americans. And all of us have 1 common goal - to make this country better than it already is. Maybe the GOP should go back to its base ideals, start listening to the people once again, and kick out the corrupt bums who cared only about absolute power lining their pockets.
