Radical Islamists do not care about multilateralism or unilateralism. They don't care whether America is part of the International Criminal Court or the Kyoto Treaty. They don't care about the Geneva Conventions. They care least about good intentions among the infidels. They care only about spreading Allah's dominion and Shariah throughout the world, through violent subjugation where intimidation does not induce surrender.
There is no amount of self-censorship or outreach that will appease them. All actions from the West are perceived in terms of signaling strength or weakness. The former deters them (just ask Khadafi) and the latter emboldens them. Don't take it from us, take it from them:
Osama bin Laden: "when people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature, they will like the strong horse"So, the question is, with the Democrats taking over the Congress and Donald Rumsfeld being replaced by a CIA careerist, what signal is America sending? How will the Islamic fascists perceive us? Are we looking more like a strong horse or more like a weak horse? Right now, the answers are muddy at best.Ayman al-Zawahiri: "The aftermath of the collapse of American power in Vietnam-and how they ran and left their agents-is noteworthy"
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah: "Regardless of how the world has changed after 11 September, Death to America will remain our reverberating and powerful slogan: Death to America."
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: "Undoubtedly, I say that this slogan and goal is achievable, and with the support and power of God, we will soon experience a world without the United States"

Why should we let what Islamic extremists think guide our foreign policy? Let's stop getting our men and women murdered in a civil war where we have no business. It's our moral obligation to establish some sort of security after we destabilized the region, and opened it up for Al Qaeda, but our presence is now fueling the insurgency according to two non partisan NIE reports. Let's really examine what we're doing over there, because stay the course isn't a policy.

We will be the strong horse. On what basis do you make the assertion that one party or the other is more fit to protect our country? The perpetrators of the first trade center bombing are in prison. The perpetrators of 9-11 are giving us the finger everyday.
