Why Does Al Gore Refuse to Debate Skeptics?

Al Gore will fly around the world (burning who knows how much jet fuel in the process) to air his science fiction movie "An Inconvenient Truth." What he won't do is debate anyone on the facts of this issue.

The interview had been scheduled for months. Mr. Gore's agent yesterday thought Gore-meets-Lomborg would be great. Yet an hour later, he came back to tell us that Bjorn Lomborg should be excluded from the interview because he's been very critical of Mr. Gore's message about global warming and has questioned Mr. Gore's evenhandedness. According to the agent, Mr. Gore only wanted to have questions about his book and documentary, and only asked by a reporter. These conditions were immediately accepted by Jyllands-Posten. Yet an hour later we received an email from the agent saying that the interview was now cancelled. What happened?
It's almost as if Gore has a religious view of "global warming" so that he refuses to look at all the science and simply maintains a blind devotion to his faith-based viewpoint. I wanted to post the full WSJ op-ed from Jyllands-Posten's editor and Lomborg but it's subscription only. This snippet is from the Corner.

Debate is good. Contrived false debate is bad. With conservatives, liberals, and moderates alike realizing that climate change is a non-partisan issue combined with the low likelihood that Gore will jump into the 2008 Presidential fray I wonder why you choose to highlight this.

Bjorn Lomborg is not without his own critics. Surely Gore realizes that by appearing with him it places Lomborg's ideas on par with the data Gore is presenting. Gore would be a fool to elevate the credibility of Lomborg in any way.

I'll leave the argument over the merits of the various scientific data up to the experts - climate scientists. Lomborg (and Gore for that matter) are just noise in the needless chatter to try to influence public opinion. This discussion about the science isn't about the science at all...it's about a political agenda and its truly sad.

A graver threat than terrorism, climate change's time has come. It's time everybody get on this bandwagon. Our future depends upon it.
