I'm sure we all expected this.
Acknowledging that his presidential campaign has opened a racial debate, Sen. Barack Obama, who has a white mother and an African father, says if you look African-American, you are treated like one. Obama and his wife, Michelle, who also addresses the race issue, appear in an interview with Steve Kroft to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday Feb. 11 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS television Network. If, as expected, Obama declares his formal candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination tomorrow, it will be his first interview to be broadcast after that event. This is Obama trying to inoculate himself from any criticism. The so-called "racial debate" nonsense is just a little preview of what's to come. As long as Obama keeps his race an issue, then he can use it as a shield from criticism. When asked by Kroft if growing up in a white household had caused him to make a decision to be black, Obama replies, "I'm not sure I decided it. I think... if you look African American in this society, you're treated as an African-American.Ó "It's interesting though, that now I feel very comfortable and confident in terms of who I am and where I stake my ground. But I notice that... I've become a focal point for a racial debate," says Obama.
Obama's wife also addresses the race issue when asked by Kroft whether she fears for her husband's life as a black candidate. "I don't lose sleep over it because the realities are that... as a black man... Barack can get shot going to the gas station," says Michelle Obama. "You can't make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen."
Be prepared. As long as Obama is running, his race will be made an issue. Not by his opponents, but by himself.
UPDATE: Proving my point that Obama's race will serve as a means of protecting him against any criticism, this moron at Daily Kos is calling me a racist. Do these idiots think that I'm going to be scared into silence over stupid and baseless allegations of racism? What did I say that was racist? Nothing, of course. But, just as was the case in Deval Patrick's election in Massachusetts, you can't criticize a minority candidate without being called a racist.
It's a stupid game, and I'm not going to let the debate deteriorate into stupid name-calling. Instead of throwing around the "racist" label, why can't they talk about the issues?

Just gotta comment on the Mitt Romney ad.
Strong Leadership?
Core Republican values?
Tell me, when did Mitt adopt those? Yesterday? Wasn't there some heart-wrenching story Mitt told in 1994 about how his brother-in-law's sister died of a botched illegal abortion? And that experience opened his eyes on why abortions should be safe legal and rare?
So, is it Mitt's strong leadership that makes it OK for him to renounce that position, effectively saying "I used the image of my dead relation for political gain. I really never cared about her death." ???
Or, is it Core Republican Values to support gay and women's rights one day, but then flop the next day for political expediency?
Or, I guess, he was a liberal Republican before he was a common-sense conservative before he was a liar.

So far, his race has been an issue with other Democrats. Personally, I wish Condi Rice was running. And last time I checked, she's black too.
NovaNardis - you know people pay to put ads here and thats not part of GOPBloggers - right? I mean, YOU could buy ad space if so desired. Just saying....

I think it's interesting how anti-Catholic behavior is acceptable within Democrat circles. Catholics along with blacks were prime targets of the KKK. Similarly, Catholic priests were sent to concentration camps along with the Jews if they were too vocal or activist.
The Edwards camp religious hatred, tied to the apparent underlying racial bigotry exposed by Biden point to the fact that the party of the Klan is awakening from its roots. All those PUBLIC things those hate filled Democrat parents learned to suppress, they nonetheless passed on to their children. Those children are now adults, and have yet to learn how to lie convincingly.

Khan,
I know ads are up for sale here as at most blogs, but it isn't as if this isn't a Romney-friendly site.

NovaNardis - Is it Romney friendly? I hadn't really noticed. I'm not convinced he's the right person - if that makes you feel better. I have yet to hear a Republican who's won me over.
