Hagel Should Have Voted Against Petraeus
by Jon Roth at 09:41 AM

Chuck Hagel is nominally a Republican, but his foreign policy leanings, which abhor the use of American military power despite all historical evidence, are clearly Democratic. Now that may extend to impeachment.

Senator Hagel, a Republican of Nebraska who is predicting that President Bush will face calls for impeachment if he ignores Congress on the war, will introduce binding legislation this week to begin the withdrawal of soldiers from Iraq.
He voted to confirm David Petraeus to run the Iraq war, and knew that Petraeus was the author of the Army's new counterinsurgency manual and a chief architect of the "surge." If Hagel is against this strategy, then he should never have voted to confirm Petraeus. Hagel, as always, seeks the adulation of the media, liberals and Europeans, rather than seeking any sort of consistent, fact-based position. If any Republican in Nebraska is seeking a Senate seat, I'm sure primary voters will be very open to listening to what contenders have to say.
