2008 GOP Primary Straw Poll - March 2007
by Matt Margolis at 05:14 AM

Welcome to GOP Bloggers' ninth 2008 Straw Poll. Our straw poll last month tallied over 11,000 votes.

Like our last poll, you get to pick which candidates you find acceptable and which ones you don't and you get to choose which candidate is your first choice for the GOP nomination in 2008. In this poll you can indicate your state, age, and gender. You can also indicate how many hours a week you read blogs, and how you can tell how committed you are to your first choice candidate.

Like our previous polls, you can post this one on your own blog and have your readers vote in the poll directly from your blog! The code is located at the bottom of this post:

Good Morning,

It might be worth noting that conservatives come in all shapes and sizes.

Where is it written in conservative dogma for instance that gays can't serve in the military(honorably/Descretly.

I am to the right oif Attila the hun when it comes to fiscal issues/education reform/military issues.

But when it comes to abortion, I believe that the first four months of pregnancy it's the mothers call. After that the govenments roll increase as infant is more self sustaining.
If a woman uses abortion as primary means of Birth control she forfiets her right to sire children. The same is true of men who willy nilly have kids and do not nuture them.

So being conservative is more complicated than a chart on a scale of 1-10. And Mayor Guilliani though not perfect may forfill that nitche. Though Frd Thompson is looking good.

We will see!

Still no listing of Ron Paul?

GOP Bloggers must be scared to death of having an actual Constitutionalist on the ballot, even in a straw poll.

Posted by: SouthernStyle at March 27, 2007 12:09 PM

Ron Paul [R-TX] ?

that is all.

Posted by: Ian Williams at March 27, 2007 03:01 PM

It would be nice to have a neutral category for those voters might not know enough about. They might be acceptable if I knew more.

Why isn't Ron Paul in your poll?

Posted by: TacyTraverso at March 27, 2007 07:07 PM

Fred Thompson is running away with the polls, and yet, if he has a stance on the war, I haven't been able to find it. Is social conservatism that dear?

Posted by: Bard at March 27, 2007 09:18 PM

Where is Ron Paul? He's my #1

Posted by: Marcus at March 27, 2007 09:47 PM

Why are main stream Republicans so afraid of the only candidate that represents conservative values consistently in his Congressional votes for over 20 years?

So afraid, that they keep him from their polls even though he's a registered presidential candidate.

Posted by: Billy at March 27, 2007 11:16 PM

The media says we need a liberal to beat a liberal.

The media also said Coward Dean would be the Demoratic nominee in '04.

When that failed they said Kerry would be the next President.

And that failed, so now they are trying to make us believe we need a liberal to beat a liberal.

I say Horse Hockey.

I am voting the issues like I always do.

Posted by: Beetle at March 27, 2007 11:23 PM

Frank,
You are a RINO at the very least with the modern view of Conservatives. I'm Centrist and have never voted for a Democrat in my life, but the Ultra right calls me Communist.

As if I care.

Posted by: Avoiceofreason at March 27, 2007 11:58 PM

No Ron Paul? Even though HE'S officially announced and polls higher than several of the candidates you listed? Sounds like you're trying to censor this constitutionalist Republican. Shame.

Posted by: Avery Knapp at March 28, 2007 07:24 AM

My top three in this order are: Newt, Duncan Hunter and F Thompson. I think the Republicans need someone who makes decisions and not back down every time they get challenged. They need to be forthright right up front and not allow these back door attacks catch them in the headlights. I also think we could use less behavior along the lines of Chuck Hagel. He should switch to the Democratic party if he believes in their values so much.

Posted by: Terry Vargason at March 28, 2007 08:49 AM

Where's Ron Paul in this straw poll? How can you get a good result if you don't include all the candidates?
Ron Paul is the ONLY acceptable candidate. He's the ONLY one who actually obeys the Constitution. He has my vote; if anyone else gets the GOP nomination I will be voting Libertarian.

Posted by: Michael Wagner at March 28, 2007 09:48 AM

Where is the Republican Congressman from Texas Ron Paul?

He's a declared candidate! You've listed undeclared candidates like Pataki, Gingrinch, Brownback and Thompson
but why leave out someone who went to Congress before Duncan Hunter and has run for President before.

Just because the Main Stream Media is ignoring this principled constitutionalist is no reason for GopBloggers to leave him out.

Thanks,

Steve

Where is Ron Paul? He should be on your poll, Republican from Texas!

Posted by: Mike at March 28, 2007 06:45 PM

Right now its Rudy for me, and maybe Fred (if he can change my Rudy mind!)

Posted by: KYJurisDoctor at March 28, 2007 07:22 PM

Your disclaimer says that your site is neutral toward all Republican candidates. Why is Dr. Ron Paul not listed?

Posted by: Lindsey at March 28, 2007 08:26 PM

I have some question for the Fred Thompson supporters:

1. What has he done besides being in the Senate?

2. Is this the same Fred Thompson that was steamrolled in the Chinagate hearings in the Senate?

3. What has he accomplished in the Senate?

4. Does he have any executive experience?

Your widget code is wrong, and should be lower case for strict xhtml, JavaScript should be javascript, and the way you are escaping the special chars makes it necessary to tweak this every time I post it anew. You also need to add "type="text/javascript" behind the language="javascript" Here's the version that will pass xhtml strict muster:

Many of the GOP Party Bosses and their Media Hacks (Shawn Hannity, etc.) seem to have already annointed Rudy G. as their nominee. One has to wonder if they will come to the realization that many conservative voters, like myself, refuse to vote for a Republican candidate this time around, simply because he/she represents the lesser of two evils. Regardless of what the present polls may indicate, Rudy is not the man who can energize the disenchanted conservative base. Either Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul or possibly Fred Thompson could do the job.

Bottom Line: Conservative Voters want a true conservative on the Republican Ballot in '08 and we belive it is time to draw an unmistakable line in the sand and give the American people a clear choice between conservatism and liberalism.

After the years of Republicans acting like Democrats, saying they will obey the constitution and limit government, but instead doing to opposite, a candidate has finally come forward that has made reconsider turning my back on the Republican party entirely. Of course he's not on the poll. I would vote for Ron Paul regardless of the party title he may wear. He's the only consistently honest and liberty driven candidate who has declared his candidacy.

Posted by: JD at March 31, 2007 08:25 AM

you need to add Ron Paul to the candidates list

Posted by: sims at March 31, 2007 10:14 AM

Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo are the ONLY two candidates of any political party I would support. Not having Ron Paul listed in your poll is at best, an oversight, at worst, an insult.

Posted by: Martin Jones at March 31, 2007 11:37 AM

First: Why no Ron Paul?

Second: Rudy McRomney? No way, no open borders RINOS.

Third: If the GOP doesn't run a pro-sovereignity, protect the borders candidate, they are finished as a party, and we are finished as a nation!

Death to the North American Community!

Interesting comments so far. There are many good conservatives I could support, but who is electable in 2008? Who has a chance against Osama Obama or Frau Hilary? It is either Guiliani or Fred Thompson at this time, I believe. So many good one for a VP candidate or high office in a Presidential Candidate -
Ron Paul, Tancredo, Duncan Hunter, Huckabee, Geo Allen, and Tommy Thompson. Right now, I see Fred Thompson. I have always liked Newt, but the Democrats would roast him to death and therefore he is unelectable. I see three major issues for 2008: The War on Terror - needing somewhat strong to beat back the Islamofascists - ragheads; Illegal Immigration - we must stop this massive sieve on our southern border and someone strong on that - BUSH sure isn't; and Gun Control - we must stop government from disarming law abiding citizens in violation of our Constitutional rights. Guiliani is great on Terror, and soft on the other two or worse; but Fred Thompson would be strong on all three, at least as I see it.

Where is Ron Paul?

Posted by: CBowen at April 3, 2007 01:04 PM

Your blog forgot about Ron Paul... If you want to take a poll you should include all of the republican candidates. Otherwise you are being bias...

Posted by: Robert at April 3, 2007 06:08 PM

Ron Paul is not a candidate in this poll because he does not believe in a strong U.S. military, like most in the Libertarian party, except for Neal Boortz.

Posted by: Don Bowen at April 6, 2007 02:40 AM

Ron Paul does believe in a strong military. To protect our borders, not to meddle with the rest of the world. Didn't the GOP hate Clinton for exactly that reason? Didn't Bush campaign against nation building?

From this very site:

"Disclaimer...

While there may be a variety of personal preferences of the individual authors that contribute to this site, GOP Bloggers will remain officially neutral until a nominee is determined.

As presidential campaigns continue to find new ways to reach out to the new media and blogs, all campaigns are welcome to consider GOP Bloggers in their blog reach-out efforts."

Really? All Campaigns? Even Ron Paul's?

Posted by: Sam Marsh at April 8, 2007 10:53 AM

I keep searching for Ron Paul's name in the poll and I can't find it. He's running for president, too. He wants to reinstate the Constitution and retain national sovereignty. He's the most conservative of them all. The mainstream media doesn't show him, because he doesn't cater to special interests. So, why can't he at least be in online polls?
I would vote for Ron Paul, with no question in my mind. For those of you who don't know who that is, ask yourself why. Would the Mainstream media promote those who have the American people's interests at heart, or would the media promote those who pay them money?

Posted by: Stephen at April 8, 2007 11:30 PM

Where's the radio button for Ron Paul????

Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo are the ONLY patriots in the lot.

Posted by: M at April 9, 2007 12:40 PM

Ron Paul... he's actually a candidate!

Posted by: convivialdingo [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 9, 2007 07:04 PM

Right from Ron Paul's web site: (http://www.house.gov/paul/)"The greatest threat facing America today is not terrorism, or foreign economic competition, or illegal immigration..."...This does not sound like the man we need for President at all...

Posted by: DJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 10, 2007 04:04 PM

Why isn't Ron Paul on the list.

Posted by: Merloz at April 10, 2007 09:51 PM

Ron Paul has been a consistently elected US Congressman since the 1970's and was even the third place candidate for President back in the late 1980's. If you believed in voting at all he of all people would be allowed to remain on the poll. Is it freedom or democracy to have a poll and remove continders and their results? Remember, even the communists allowed voting, they just carefully selected the continders. Are we no different?

Posted by: Curtis Wood at April 11, 2007 12:42 AM

You don't think that trillions in debt is a problem? You really believe that we can keep printing fiat money to cover deficits forever?
That's what Ron Paul thinks is our biggest problem. I don't think he's wrong.

Posted by: Sam Marsh at April 11, 2007 10:29 AM

The key words are "the greatest threat facing America today". Anyone who puts terrorism fourth or fifth on their list in not fit to be President until the jihadists are neutralized...

Posted by: DJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 12, 2007 12:03 AM

Why no Ron Paul. The heck with Guiliani and McCain. Here in Lampasas everybody I have talked to supports Paul, unless they don't even know he is running (yes, some still don't). Once I tell them they usually say something like 'well heck, Paul is great but I didn't even know he was running. I guess I wont be coming back to this site.

CONDOLEEZA RICE is my FIRST CHOICE for PRESIDENT in 2008 with Tom Tancredo as Vice President.

Posted by: Dee Hickman at April 22, 2007 08:08 AM

Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate whose consistent and articulate defense of Constitutional government qualifies him for my support. I'm tired of shills for the globalist corporate elite passing themselves off as "conservatives" when they conserve nothing, especially our liberty. Ron Paul stands in defense of the ideals of the American Revolution and provides us an alternative to those who promote government intrusion into our private lives, a ruinous monetary policy, national bankruptcy, and the wholesale invasion of our country.

Posted by: Steve at May 1, 2007 09:10 AM

To exclude Ron Paul because of his military stance is to act just like the mainstream media, which excludes evidence regarding global warming, excludes evidence of the true cost of socialist programs for illegals, and a host of other issues. It is am embarrassment to the GOP to have a web site that porports to be GOP-oriented, and yet clearly and deliberately decide not to have one of its own party members on its straw poll based on a single issue.

George Orwell would be proud of you.

Posted by: Warren at May 1, 2007 09:47 AM

Well, Ron Paul will have been in TWO DEBATES next Tuesday. More than we can say for some candidates on your list.

Will he ever get on your poll?
