Pelosi Set to Compound Error in Syria Visit With Iran Visit
by Jon Roth at 10:02 AM

Congressional leaders who attempt to conduct a shadow foreign policy make a huge mistake regardless of party. America must speak with one voice to the world and, based on our Constitution, that voice is the President's. This is why most observers left and right, including the Washington Post and USA Today (the NYT is so far gone who even cares what they have to say anymore since it's nothing more than reflexive DNC talking points), agree that Nancy Pelosi's political stunt in Damascus undermined America abroad as she tried to score political points at home.

And now she seems to want to repeat the error on a larger scale by cozying up to and legitimizing the crazy President of Iran.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, just back from a trip to Syria that sparked sharp criticism from Republicans and the Bush administration, suggested Tuesday that they may be interested in taking another diplomatic trip - to open a dialogue with Iran.

The Democratic speaker from San Francisco and Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, were asked at a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday whether on the heels of their recent trip to the Middle East they would be interested in extending their diplomacy in the troubled region with a visit to Iran.

"Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,'' Lantos said. "Speaking for myself, I'm ready to go -- and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.''

As a Holocaust survivor, Lantos ought to know better than to legitimize Ahmadinejad with a visit. All Mahmoud does is deny the Holocaust of the last century, while simultaneously planning one for this century, this decade in fact.

If the Democrats have nothing else to do but attack the Bush adminstration, fine. They're out of ideas and bereft of an agenda so what else can we expect. But this behavior actually weakens America by advertising to our enemies that we can be divided and conquered and that if Bush won't appease them then the Democrats will. Thugs do not change their ways just because you talked to them; they only change course when presented with a credible threat. Pelosi's antics nearly ensure that any threats we might make will not be seen as credible and that only following through on those threats can restore our credibility. In that sense, the Democratic sycophantic tour of mideast dictators will lead to exactly the opposite of what they hope to achieve.

Nancy and Harry Reid won't sit down with Bush to dialogue about appropriations for our troops but Nancy wants to have a dialogue with Ahmedinajad? Where's Lewis Carroll when you need him.
