Contrary to what Jimmy Carter, George Soros and their ilk believe, the main problem in the world today is that it is not enough like America. These post-nation state multilateralists, who would easily surrender American sovereignty to unelected, unaccountable (and unscrupulous) bureaucrats and functionaries, disdain all that America stands for and exalt anyone that opposes U.S. policy.
This is the type of worldview and these are the dynamics they prefer:
The Russian government can brazenly commit murder on British soil and stonewall all prosecutorial cooperationA Republican presidential candidate could probably gain a lot of support if he ran through this litany proving how harmful the UN and World Bank are to the world and vowed that America would withhold all financial support for those organizations until there was meaningful reform that stripped away the equivalence between free nations and tyrannies. If he would promise to clean out Foggy Bottom from top to bottom, he'd ride a huge wave of support. The Chinese government can arm the Sudanese government and, indirectly, Janjaweed militias while blocking any UN action to halt the slaughter and expulsion of the people of Darfur
UN bureaucrats can engage in widespread graft and embezzlement with no repercussions whatsoever
World Bank bureaucrats accustomed to lining the pockets of dictators with American taxpayers' money can lynch the Bank's president on trumped up charges
UN "peacekeepers" can rape and pillage at will
Russia is still invited to G-8 summits even though it has completely reverted to old authoritarian ways
Cuban political dissidents can rot in prisons, while terrorists granted plentiful halal food, abundant legal counsel and free health care are the cause celebre of the Davos crowd
Venezuelan citizens can have their civil rights shredded, while the Democratic Congress delivers a debilitating blow to our strong anti-terror and anti-communist ally Colombia
Hezbollah and Hamas can launch rockets at Israeli population centers with impunity, directly targeting civilians, but when Israel responds militarily to halt the carnage it is treated as the instigator
The UN can impose a resolution to stop the re-armament of Hamas by Syria, which is openly flouted with no consequences
Syria can assassinate a top Lebanese political figure and receive diplomatic cover from Chinese and Russian Security Council vetoes
Zimbabwe's tyrant can violently repress all political opposition and turn his nation from a food exporter to a famine-riddled country, but Israel is the subject of all UN "human rights" resolutions
Iran can be elected as the vice chairman of the UN's Disarmament Commission
China (which supports the rape of Darfur), Cuba (which routinely jails political opponents), Russia (which murders regularly independent journalists and dismantles opposition groups) and Saudi Arabia (which prohbits religious freedom) are all on the UN Human Rights Council
There is violence and intolerance in the world because all those in the diplomacy business reward and encourage terrorism and repression by letting it pass so easily, if not outrightly supporting it. Only when the democracies of the world band together and punish human rights transgressors with their full economic and political power will there be any changes. The tacit approval of Chinese, Cuban, radical Islamic or Russian tactics must end. That is what ails the world, not the sacrifice of American blood and treasure, a noble tradition that is well over 60 years old.
We should not be so self-censored by political correctness that we cannot vocally claim that the liberal Western tradition of democracy - the gift of the Enlightenment - is far superior to any other mode of societal organization. Freedom is better than slavery and free will is better than coercion. The free world must stop making excuses for itself and assert these manifest and simple truths. We can only overcome the ills that plague this world when we recover the faith and conviction of our own civic heritage and defend the values that set the West apart.
