Jefferson Steps Down From Small Business Committee
by Matt Margolis at 01:39 PM

William Jefferson, who was nearly placed on the Homeland Security Committee by Nancy Pelosi, has resigned from the Small Business Committee.

Sadly, this is too little too late. In the coming days and weeks we'll likely see Democrats beefing up their ethics reform rhetoric and attempt to use the Jefferson scandal as an example of their superior ethics, when in fact, the Jefferson bribery scandal shows the exact opposite.

The facts speak for themselves:

  • Jefferson has been under investigation since March of 2005.
  • Despite mounds of evidence against, including being implicated by a former staffer, Democrats turned a blind eye to his troubles.
  • Democrats only booted him off the Ways and Means Committee after it was revealed that there was videotape evidence of him accepting a bribe.
  • Jefferson was reelected last November despite the scandal.
  • Jefferson received a standing ovation from the Congressional Black Caucus despite the scandal.
  • Nancy Pelosi nearly placed Jefferson on the House Homeland Security Committee despite the scandal.

So, when a liberal says "At least the left leaning blogs are calling for his resignation...." or any other ridiculous comment implying the ethical superior of Democrats or liberal bloggers, you can just laugh in their face, because if the left leaning blogs treated Jefferson like they have treated any Republicans accused (rightfully or falsely) of wrongdoing, they would have demanded Jefferson resign back in March 2005.

There is no moral high ground for the Democrats here.
