This will come as a relief to the Republican Party - as of January 2009, come what may, we won't have the burden of Hagel:
WASHINGTON - Chuck Hagel will announce Monday that he is retiring from the U.S. Senate and will not run for president next year, people close to the Nebraska Republican said Friday.Hagel plans to announce that "he will not run for re-election and that he does not intend to be a candidate for any office in 2008," said one person, who asked not to be named.
Hagel has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. Monday at the Omaha Press Club.
According to one person interviewed, Hagel told Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Friday morning that he had decided to retire. Hagel's staff learned of his decision that afternoon.
The North Platte native earned national recognition as perhaps the most vocal, at times angry, GOP critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies.
The only thing I can figure about Hagel is that once upon a time he must have counted up how many Republicans and how many Democrats there are in Nebraska and decided that "Republican" was the way to go for a man with political ambitions in his State. Other than that, there's no way to explain the way he's been nothing but a bother to the GOP - never sticking with us, and always playing up to the most anti-GOP elements in the MSM.
Goodbye, Senator Hagel; good luck in your future career as a pet GOP "analyst" in the MSM...
Schmagel will probably hire on at (DN)CNN or MS-LSD as their "conservative" analyst...

Hagel is Republican. He has more guts and grit then the rest of the neocon rabble. This should be a sad day for the party. As usual, I find your comments laughable.

Good Riddance to Hagel! He isn't retiring, he is running away from the humiliation of not winning the next election. He would have been a big loser and he didn't want to face that! He was no conservative and no republican and the people finally woke up to it and he knows it!
